I went and bought the Stellarmate image and got it up and running in a couple of minutes. I agree that Linux /Indi/Kstars is a steep learning curve but most new ways of doing things are - even moving from Windows version to the next is far from simple. Note this version presents different modes of working including acting as a AP server for when "out in the field". Astroberry uses Ubuntu 16.04 Mate which is inline with normal Ubuntu Mate 16.04 Indi/Kstars does not have problems with Wifi. BUT note the 18.04 release is BETA so will have problem and it would be better IMHO to wait until the Stable release appears.ģ. Ubuntu 18.04 mate wifi works using 2.4ghz no problem but 5ghz is not sorted yet - this is a ubuntu problem not indi/kstars. Range and interference - the latter is minimised using 5ghz but you do loose distance/coverage depend on your other wifi kit.Ģ. ubuntu 16.04 mate supports wifi on a rpi 3 and 3b+ both in 5ghz and 2.4ghz range - i have been using it for 2.5yrs with only the normal problems of WiFi e.g. Each operating system will have different setup instructions, please find these instructions outlined below. I struggled for hours this morning when I found that 16.04 didn't support wireless. It should be first noted, if you have a Logitech Harmony remote control, no installation of any software is needed. Looks very promising assuming I can get Ubuntu working.

Then I can install the Astroberry software created by Kaczorek. This is supposed to fix the wireless issues. So I'm about to try the Ubuntu MATE 18.04 for Raspberry Pi 3 B+. Seems I'm answering my own questions minutes after I post. I actually used SM for two years before moving to AB, as I don’t need the app, as I run mine, the same way you mention above over VNC, and TBH I find AB faster, more stable and generally better, and of course it’s free….Ok, I know I'm late to the party and I really should spend more time researching.

Stellarmate is pretty much the same, I have that too, but costs $49 but you do get a very good app with it for full control from mobile devices and iPads… No, it won’t al fit in the flirc case, as that case uses heatsinks built into the case that draw the heat out of the case and these touch all the parts that get very hot, these would be in the way…. Good decision, firstly I use Astroberry which is a free image file for you SD card and has all the software you will need, Kstars, Ekos, Indi, PhD2 and much more…. Will probably install stellarmate on the pi.

Anyone see any problems, have tips an tricks that may help. Will buy a stepper motor and diy mount it. I'll be imaging using a Canon 6d, guided by ASI 120 mini guider and sw evoguide, main scope sw 120 esprit and moonlite focuser.

I'd like a Bluetooth connection between mount and the pi to utilise my existing Bluetooth module attached to the neq6 and therfore one cable less, I'd also like to control a stepper motor for focusing (will the flirc case house both the pi and stepper motor controller hat?). After many years of using a laptop outside at the mount I've finally decided to evolve with technology and go down the raspberry pi4 8gb route and vnc to it from indoors using my desktop PC running windows 10.
